The hour-long ‘Forest Hour’ radio programme aired weekly since 2019, has shone a light onto hidden issues in the forest sector. The has exposed forest illegalities including non-compliance with forest laws, failure to uphold company-community agreements, policy failures, and weak administration by both local and national forest leaders. And it has had notable successes. It is produced by Liberia Forest Media Watch (LFMW), a group of investigative journalists, also formed as part of this initiative.

An advocacy strategy that seeks to publicize and promote changes in laws, regulations, contracts and agreements in the forestry sector in Liberia has been developed under the framework of the EU sponsored project “Strengthening the capacity of non-state actors to improve FLEGT-VPA and REDD+ processes in Western Africa”, through the NGO Collation of Liberia (NCL).

Over 60 people in forested communities in Lofa, Gbarpolu and Sinoe counties in Liberia have received training in Community Forest Monitoring (CFM). The training has empowered community members to document illegal logging activities, monitor social agreements’ implementation signed between communities and companies and resolve and mitigate potential challenges in accessing benefit from the forests-using forest monitoring tools.
