Artisanal millers who have been trained to use legal equipment in wood processing have appealed to the Government of Ghana to grant them access to timber concessions to enable them produce legal lumber for the domestic market.

A total of two hundred and twenty-five (225) people living in forest fringe communities received training in various skills last year under the Chainsaw Milling (CSM) Project being run by Tropenbos International Ghana with funding from the European Union.

In Viet Nam, hydropower enterprises are required to compensate for the forest land lost due to hydropower development. However, the rate of reforestation is too slow and does not meet the official requirements, was a conclusion during the workshop “Current Status of and Solutions to Forestland Conversion for Hydropower Plant Development in the Central Zone and Central Highlands of Viet Nam” (25 December 2015, in Hue city Viet Nam). Participants also mentioned that hydropower enterprises don’t fulfil their financial obligations towards forest protection and development.

Forests are another land where people can live in harmony; a place that can be called “home”. But a dying message has been sent from the forests – also from the Indonesian forest, telling us that it continues to degrade, to face serious threats and to drastically change its forest cover. Between 2009 and 2013, Indonesia has lost 4.6 million ha of forest area and now the remaining area is only about 82 million ha (Forest Watch Indonesia, 2014). The number will continue to shrink if we don’t do anything to save the remaining.

Forests are not just an assemblage of trees, a reservoir of carbon stocks or mere items with a monetary value used for economic exchange but possess an inherent value for forest fringe communities; such values should be recognised and taken into consideration when drafting laws and policies on forest governance.

Over a hundred and sixty (160) tree growers in sixteen communities in Ghana have benefited from capacity building workshops organised by Tropenbos International (TBI) Ghana as part of a series of measures geared towards strengthening tree growers and their associations in Ghana.
