A landscape approach to fire management – Fire free peatland under shared governance in Indonesia

A landscape approach to fire management – Fire free peatland under shared governance in Indonesia

Indonesia - 13 June, 2024

In the peatlands in Indonesia, efforts should be directed towards prevention measures that result in wildfire risk reduction. We believe a participatory and inclusive approach is the most effective fire prevention strategy.

Through the promotion of peatland restoration, alternative land-use options, and well-coordinated fire prevention policies at district and landscape levels, our partner, Tropenbos Indonesia, leads collaborative work to reduce the risks of peatland fires in one district in West Kalimantan. The TBI approach to fire prevention in Indonesia consists of:

  • Improved policies and practices through multistakeholder governance and planning
  • Groundwater level management through canal blocking
  • Community-based peatland monitoring through village smart patrol teams
  • Peatland-adaptive agricultural practices

The results of these actions are already making a difference in the peatlands in west Kalimantan. Our interventions have been fully adopted by local stakeholders, through allocations of state budgets and implementation of the action plans in the peat landscape. Community-based fire and peatland monitoring patrols have been up and running in four villages covering approximately 40,000 ha.
